Agricultural Commodity Exchanges
There are several ways, some involving computer models, to help farmers
decide how to allocate farm resources so as to try and maximise
profits. However, unless a farmer can also exercise some control over
his input prices and the prices at which he sells produce, profits can
be substantially reduced.
Our DEX initiative, which provides a channel for equity capital for
supports rural community projects, has identified effective procurement
of inputs and marketing of project outputs as a central issues in
determining income levels and sustainability.
As a first step to improve the "market position" of farmers, we are
helping develop AGRICOMEX, the Agricultural Commodity Exchange. This
work is being undertaken in collaboration with Seel-TelesisTM online services. AGRICOMEX is specifically for commercial farmers.
In the case of low income rural communities, a different system, called
MAX (Market Access Exchange) is being designed (based on AGRICOMEX).
This takes into account a range of other information required by rural
community projects. It reflects the fact that the range of potential
outputs of projects is not limited to agricultural produce but can
include semi-processed and processed materials as well as items which
are not agricultural.
